Chapter 43 A Twist of Fate
Chapter 43 A Twist of Fate
The officer held a gun to Evans' head with one hand and reached out with the other to check Yang Weining's breathing.
still alive.
He called out "Comrade" twice, and Yang Weining responded vaguely twice, but did not react further.
The officers tried to press Evans for details about what had happened, but the foreigner clearly didn't understand Chinese and just kept speaking in a foreign language while holding up his photo ID.
The police officer couldn't understand him and gestured for him to get out of the car. As soon as he relaxed his guard, the foreigner tried to run away.
Given his previous intent to assault a police officer, the officer didn't waste any words, grabbed Evans by the collar, smashed him with the butt of his gun, then handcuffed him, locked his knuckles behind his back, and kicked him into the trunk.
Then, the police officers helped the disoriented Yang Weining up, put him in the passenger seat, and sped off towards the town's hospital.
Upon arriving at the hospital, the police officers called out the substitute emergency nurses, handed Yang Weining over to them, and then rushed to the town's police station.
A large crowd had gathered in the open space in front of the police station. The officers got out of their car, locked Evans inside with a key, and headed straight for the interrogation room inside the police station.
As the officer passed an empty room next to the interrogation room, he caught a glimpse of a white sheet stained with blood in the dark room. Judging from the outline of the sheet, there should be a person underneath, but the head area was dented.
This eerie scene sent a chill down his spine, even for someone as brave as him.
The murderer was truly a ruthless and vicious man.
At the entrance to the interrogation room, he encountered the bureau chief talking to someone else.
"Boss, boss," the officer asked softly, "there was a foreigner in that car who tried to assault me. I handcuffed him and brought him back. What do we do now?"
"Foreigners? And they fucking assaulted a police officer."
The bureau chief felt like he'd seen a ghost. This tiny town was so small that it was difficult for even city people to get here, let alone foreigners.
But the murder case at hand was more important, so he could only have his subordinates lock Evans in the car and keep a close watch on him.
The chief turned and went back to the interrogation room. In the dim light, veteran officers from the local police force were questioning the suspect according to procedure.
What's infuriating is that no matter what the veteran police officer asked, the suspect seemed indifferent and gave many inconsistencies in his answers.
The city's top officials were unsure when they would arrive, and the director, not wanting to appear incompetent, gave a signal to the veteran police officer to close the doors and windows and draw the curtains.
He's going to use some tricks to put the suspect in a tight spot.
But as soon as the door closed, before he could even utter a threatening word, the wooden door was kicked open with a bang.
Zhang Zhi'ao poked his head in, smiled apologetically, and said, "Sorry to bother everyone, I didn't control my strength well."
"What do you do?!"
The chief stepped forward to question him, but the man walked in as if no one else was there and unlocked the suspect's handcuffs.
"Comrade Youyu, what do we do now?"
Li Youyu stood up, cracked his knuckles, and said, "Find him. Don't let Evans get away."
The two of them walked out like that.
The bureau chief belatedly realized what was happening and tried to chase after him, only to bump into a city bureau leader with a livid face as soon as he stepped outside.
"You pig-brain, thank goodness you didn't resort to underhanded tactics."
"No, that's all..."
The city bureau leader punched him hard and yelled, "It's a classified mission for Radar Peak. Don't ask so many questions. Call your men and have them come help."
As Li Youyu left the police station, he could see the town brightly lit, with flashlight beams flashing everywhere.
Zhang Zhi'ao replied, "The town is under lockdown and martial law. No one is allowed to enter or leave. Apart from those who stayed behind at Red Shore, everyone else is searching for Evans' whereabouts in the city."
Just then, a soldier came to deliver a message.
"Report!"
"We located one of our targets, Harry Peterson, at the town's exit. According to him, Evans hid a jeep in the bushes for their escape, and Chief Engineer Yang tried to stop them. Both of them have now disappeared!"
Oh no.
Li Youyu's heart tightened.
Old Yang was definitely stalling Evans for his own sake. We must find them immediately, or Old Yang will be in grave danger.
"Old Zhang, you take a team and search along the highway."
"Comrade," Li Youyu beckoned to the uniformed municipal police chief, "please set up checkpoints on the nearest town roads as quickly as possible, and stop any suspicious-looking men!"
The municipal bureau leader saluted, indicating that he would fully cooperate, and then called his subordinates to begin assigning tasks.
"Old He."
After listening to the instructions, the county bureau chief walked over and whispered, "Those names are so gibberish, are they looking for foreigners?"
"So what if it is? Hurry up and go find it. Why are you talking so much nonsense?"
The two were comrades-in-arms in the army and have been friends for more than ten years, so they naturally didn't hold back when they talked.
The municipal bureau leader, known as Lao He, glanced around and whispered in the county bureau chief's ear, "Whether it's catching spies or something, it's none of our business. The man who was beaten to death in the street was also involved in this."
We were instructed by our superiors to follow his orders completely!
You arrested someone of great importance, and you even want to torture them? You're incredibly stupid.
Stop asking so many questions, just get on with the setup. If we actually manage to stop someone, we'll get a damn credit!
"Well.."
The county bureau chief hesitated for a moment, thinking, "Could it really be such a coincidence?"
Old He slapped him on the head again, "You son of a bitch, hurry up and go!"
"Old He, I think I've met him before."
Old He couldn't catch his breath and coughed violently, choked by the wind. "What did you say?"
He asked loudly.
Li Youyu also noticed the situation and turned around.
The county bureau chief looked at everyone, somewhat embarrassed, and said, "On the way here, I saw a Jeep that seemed a bit odd, so I had my men stop it. It turned out the driver told me it was a foreigner..."
and then?
Old He gripped his shoulders, his face serious.
He wanted to hear the answer that they had caught him, not that they had fucking let him go.
Under everyone's gaze, the county police chief pointed to the police car parked in the shadows and said, "My men brought him back, and he's being held in the car now."
"Holy crap."
Someone cursed, and everyone took off running.
Zhang Zhi'ao was the first to run to the police car. When the police officer guarding the car saw that the person was coming in a menacing manner, he wanted to get out of the car to block him, but when he saw the bureau chief who was also running wildly behind him, he quickly ducked back into the car.
Zhang Zhi'ao opened the car door and saw Evans, who had already been dealt with and was covered in bruises.
He waved to signal everyone not to come closer, and then four soldiers ran up carrying a huge black cloth, covering the entire vehicle completely.
"Old Liang."
Standing still, Old He called the county bureau chief by name for the first time tonight. His voice trembled slightly, "You've finally cleared your head for once. This time, we can...we can probably become brothers in the provincial capital."
