Chapter 90 Peeping
"Nebula, don't be foolish! Run!" Sarutobi Asuma shouted even louder when he saw Shingetsu Nebula raising her longsword.
He simply did not believe that Shenyue Xingyun, with only a sword, could be a match for the giant bear.
In his mind, if Shenyue Xingyun didn't run away, the giant bear could easily slap him, sending him flying with his sword, coughing up blood.
So we still have to run!
Even if they can't outrun the giant bear, and even if it's a bit embarrassing, there's no one else here! With their numerical advantage and the addition of explosive tags, the three of them still have a good chance of escaping.
No matter how much he shouted, Shenyue Xingyun remained unmoved.
As he watched the giant bear's enormous paw burst forth through the air, he couldn't help but squint, seemingly unable to bear witnessing what was about to happen.
A second later, Sarutobi Asuma paused.
His narrowed eyes widened in surprise, then opened even wider, his mouth agape as if he could swallow an egg.
"It's a lie—is it?"
"A hallucination?"
The Hokage's office.
Amidst the wisps of smoke, light and shadow flickered on the crystal ball.
Hiruzen Sarutobi sat at his desk, a pipe in hand, staring intently at the image on the crystal ball.
As the injected chakra fluctuated, the scenes constantly shifted. There were teams setting traps, ninja instructors secretly recording, and several important figures in the Forest of Death.
Hiruzen Sarutobi muttered to himself.
"The quality of this year's graduates is quite good."
"Genma, hmm, his trap-setting skills are quite good."
"Might Guy—" Sarutobi Asuma looked at the image on the crystal ball, his brow furrowing into a knot.
"How come you fell into the trap yourself after setting it up!"
-
"Looks like he had really bad luck with the draw. This kid's good at other things, but setting up traps is really too much for him."
The door said, "Never mind, next one—"
As the screen flickered, Hiruzen Sarutobi learned of the movements of each squad, and soon a familiar person appeared on the screen.
"Mute".
"Why are you arguing with your teammates?"
In the scene, Shizune and her two teammates seem to be arguing about something. On the opposite side, Ibiki Morino is waving his hands as if explaining, while Mizuki stands aside with his signature smile on his face.
After arguing for a short while, Shizune gave in and sullenly hid to the side, while Morino Ibiki and Mizuki began setting up traps on their own.
The traps were set up starting at the entrance. Hiruzen Sarutobi wasn't surprised to see this. According to the existing rules, the entrance and the end point were the optimal locations for setting traps.
However, as he watched, he stopped smoking and his eyes grew increasingly surprised.
"These two little guys are cunning—they're very talented."
He sprinkled the powder, activated the mechanism, and poured in the kerosene. As the trap was set up and the scene was perfected, Hiruzen Sarutobi grew increasingly astonished.
As Ibiki Morino set up the trap, he wore a happy and carefree smile, seemingly proud of his masterpiece. Mizuki, standing beside him, had a cryptic look in his eyes, lost in thought.
Half an hour later, after confirming that nothing had been missed, the two took Jingyin to the next location.
For the rest of the time, Hiruzen Sarutobi spent most of his time observing Mizuki's team, simply because among this group of genin, their team had the best deployment skills.
"Knock knock." A knock sounded on the door, but Hiruzen Sarutobi didn't even look up: "Come in."
The visitor handed a list to Hiruzen Sarutobi's desk and then left. Hiruzen Sarutobi picked up the list.
"Let me see, the opponent of Team Mizuki is—Asuma?"
"That brat! He's got some pretty good luck."
Looking at his son's name and recalling the trap set by the Mizuki Squad, Hiruzen Sarutobi's old face revealed a hint of anticipation.
"You're in for it this time."
Time passed slowly, and finally it was time for the second batch of teams to enter. This time, Hiruzen Sarutobi did not pay attention to the other teams and planned to wait for his subordinates' reports. He fixed the image on the crystal ball on Asuma Sarutobi.
In the scene, Sarutobi Asuma did not rush in, but instead used his shadow clone to scout ahead.
Hiruzen Sarutobi scoffed, "At least you have some brains."
Soon, Sarutobi Asuma had a flash of inspiration, jumped over the silken mechanism, and stepped precisely into the explosive tag trap.
Hiruzen Sarutobi: "But not many."
As the three stepped onto the ground at the entrance, Hiruzen Sarutobi felt even more excited, thinking about the medicinal powder that Mizuki had carefully sprinkled earlier.
No! It's not anticipation; he's just concerned about his brat's growth!
As expected, the three of them encountered numerous troubles along the way.
Crawling beetles, attacking beasts, and snakes constantly launching attacks.
Finally, the three of them put on their new shoes.
Hiruzen Sarutobi took a puff of his pipe, feeling slightly bored, and suddenly realized he wasn't as happy anymore.
The next trap was still a long way off, and he planned to switch the camera to see how the other teams were doing, but just then, the screen suddenly started to fluctuate.
He saw that Sarutobi Asuma's expression suddenly turned panicked.
Hiruzen Sarutobi raised an eyebrow and zoomed in on the scene. Suddenly, a roaring giant bear, five or six meters tall, appeared in the frame.
Hiruzen Sarutobi's expression immediately turned serious.
"It's this big guy."
"Asuma probably can't beat him, right?"
Hiruzen Sarutobi spoke, but there wasn't much worry in his eyes. While the animals of the Death Forest still retained their wild nature, their aggression towards humans wasn't as strong. With Asuma and his companions' strength, escaping their territory shouldn't be too difficult.
In the scene, Sarutobi Asuma begins to hold off the giant bear for his teammates.
Hiruzen Sarutobi nodded slightly. Although he knew the other party didn't have the ability, his spirits were still high.
Then, Sarutobi Asuma started giving the giant bear a cigarette.
Hiruzen Sarutobi's lips twitched, and then he picked up his pipe and took a deep drag.
However, when the giant bear broke through the smoke and he saw its reddened eyes, he immediately sensed that something was wrong.
"These eyes—no!"
Hiruzen Sarutobi frowned.
The giant bear's eyes were unusually bloodthirsty, as if what was before it was not an intruder into its territory, but an exceptionally delicious prey.
Hiruzen Sarutobi immediately thought of a poison that could drive beasts into a frenzy. But that poison wasn't cheap!
Thinking of the medicinal powder that Mizuki had scattered at the entrance, Hiruzen Sarutobi was filled with doubt.
"Did it accidentally stick to my body?"
"How could a newly graduated genin possibly have spilled so much?" He wanted to send someone to check the entrance, but then he suddenly remembered that the ground had already been burned by the fire.
Just as he was considering whether to wait for the proctoring Jonin or go there himself, the giant bear smashed a tree into pieces with one paw, and Sarutobi Asuma and Yuhi Kurenai began to dodge in different directions.
The excessively handsome boy remained where he was.
"Nonsense!" Hiruzen Sarutobi blurted out.
Was he confident, or was he trying to buy time for his teammates? He wasn't sure. But he was certain that his opponent was a genin who had inherited the Will of Fire.
Half a second later, a white light and shadow appeared on the crystal ball.
Hiruzen Sarutobi's pipe stopped in mid-air, and his old face showed the same look of astonishment as Asuma Sarutobi.
"What?!"
