Chapter 307 Queen Maeve and Storm
Rune did not take the driving test.
Whether it's a mage capable of opening portals or a half-Kryptonian capable of flying at Mach 10, a driver's license is something that's optional. So Rune didn't bother to take the test, while Clark had already obtained his license before getting the car from Luther.
Hughie certainly had a driver's license, but it was just a regular one. Before Judgment Day, he had only driven cars. But a school bus requires a different kind of license. However, circumstances forced him to drive the school bus no matter what.
Rune didn't reveal too much of his abilities. In a situation where robots were sweeping across the Earth, flying would make him easy to be detected. Moreover, he couldn't reveal his hand to his enemy until he was sure whether his enemy was Skynet from the Terminator movies or some mad scientist from Marvel.
However, the possibility of Skynet is actually very slim, because Rune has not yet seen the naked man with muscles all over his body. His enemy is likely just someone who has obtained some of the Terminator robot blueprints, but has not obtained Skynet's most powerful weapon - the time machine.
..
The steel gates of Fort Irwin closed slowly under the cover of night, emitting a harsh screeching sound. Storm stood atop the watchtower, her smooth black hair fluttering in the dry wind. Her blue eyes scanned the desolate desert in the distance, while her black uniform and cloak remained pristine, as if the catastrophe known as Judgment Day had never occurred.
Why turn those seven people away?
A weary voice came from below. The speaker was a woman who had been virtually unknown before Judgment Day, but had risen to prominence in the base afterward. This country girl named Annie called herself Starlight because of her ability to generate, project, and emit dazzling light from her hands.
If the other woman didn't possess some superpowers, Storm would definitely have kicked her out. Of course, even if the other woman had the power, Storm wouldn't have given her a friendly look.
"Watch your tone!" Storm said coldly. "We have limited resources, Starlight. We can't afford to feed those beggars!"
Starlight climbed up the watchtower, her golden hair disheveled and dull, casually tied into a ponytail by its owner—a look that Storm didn't even bother to look at.
"But there are children among them," Starlight said, her voice tinged with obvious weariness. "And those children all meet your requirements; they're all white, and they don't eat much, as far as I know—"
"Enough!" Storm turned around, a mocking smile playing on her lips. "I know what you're going to say. It's nothing more than that we have enough food to feed many more people each day, but now that winter is here, other people will have less and less food. You can't use the food we get today to calculate how many ordinary people we can help in the future. Do you understand?!"
As she spoke, Storm's face turned completely cold. She tapped Starlight's chest with one hand, staring wide-eyed at him: "Your so-called kindness is letting those ungrateful wretches come in, steal our food, and drag the whole camp down, is that it? This isn't the civilized era you live in anymore. We're waging war now, a war against the robots!"
Queen Maeve then walked over. The loud noise from the two arguing had been heard by almost all the survivors, so she had to come out and interrupt their standoff.
"Enough!" Maeve's voice wasn't loud, but it was enough to calm the two men down. "The patrol reported that the power grid in the East District is malfunctioning again. Which of you will go and take some people to check it out?"
This survivor camp, converted from an abandoned military base, houses nearly two thousand people and is one of the last large human settlements on the West Coast.
But the daily life at Fort Irwin Vault consisted of arguments, compromises, and survival, especially after the arrival of that veteran hero, which changed the entire vault's atmosphere.
Currently, Storm, as the most powerful hero, is responsible for directly defending against the Terminators on the front lines. Her ability to fly and unleash lightning poses a significant threat to them. Starlight, the kindest among them, is in charge of managing internal affairs. As for Queen Maeve, she is primarily responsible for leading her squad to scavenge for supplies.
Although the three superpowered individuals are all protecting the shelter, their relationship is not harmonious; more precisely, it's a conflict between Starlight,
Queen Maeve and Storm do not get along well.
"I'll go check it out." Storm glanced at the other two women, then snorted coldly, "I won't disturb your private conversation!"
After saying that, Storm left, while Starlight watched her fly towards the East District power grid.
"I really miss the old days." Starlight pouted. "No wonder that racist jerk wasn't in the Seven before Judgment Day. I even had Storm posters up in my house before!"
Queen Maeve opened her mouth, but what could she say? Should she shatter their dreams with harsh reality and tell the Star Seven that they were a bunch of selfish bastards who only cared about their approval ratings?
Let's just leave it at that and preserve this innocent little girl's beautiful dream.
The words were already on the tip of her tongue, but Queen Maeve swallowed them back. She began to sift through her memories for any good news she could find: "We've found another oasis. Perhaps we can send some people there to farm, so the shelter can accommodate more people."
A smile finally appeared on Starlight's face, and she excitedly hugged Queen Maeve.
But what Queen Maeve didn't say was that the oasis was too far from the shelter, and if those damned robots attacked, the shelter would likely be powerless to stop them. Furthermore, the ammunition in the warehouse was almost gone, forcing Maeve to now engage in hand-to-hand combat with the robots.
But there's no need to tell this to the little girl.
Around eight o'clock the next day, although the sun had already risen, the temperature was still relatively low, and at this time, an alarm sounded at the gate of Fort Irwin.
"Two humanoid creatures are approaching the shelter!" The Sentinel's voice came through the communicator to Storm's ears. She was already angry because she had been ostracized by the other two, so she sneered and took to the air.
When she arrived at the door, Storm saw figures not far away—who else could it be but Rune and Hughie?
The school bus didn't accompany them for long. After dropping them off on the eastern side of the San Bernardino Mountains, it lost its sole purpose. Rune and Hughie then began walking. Fortunately, with the help of magic, their walking speed was quite fast. Rune easily dealt with any Terminators they encountered along the way using magic.
Rune also proposed a theory that heading in the direction where the Terminators were increasing might lead to a safe haven. Hughie tried to stop him several times, but after Rune killed more than a dozen Terminators in an instant, he stopped talking.
So be it. I've killed so many Terminators along the way, so dying won't be a wasted trip.
Hughie thought to himself with a mournful face.
