Chapter 279 Free New Armor
"My God, I just don't know why it suddenly turned out like this!" Clark said in disbelief.
The raven was extremely angry, and in her rage, the entire room was filled with dark magic, as if it had fallen into eternal night.
"It's simple." Rune used magic to crush the LMD, which, as expected, exploded. However, in his hands, the sparks were no match for it. "Nick Fury is a very cautious guy. He's ruthless, decisive, and even willing to use extreme methods, including sacrificing allies and manipulating and exploiting other superheroes—"
"But at the same time, his will to protect the Earth is extremely firm. I guess he's just testing us, creating a psychological profile for us. Clark will probably be classified as safe or relatively safe, while Raven and I..." Rune looked at the dark magic filling the room and the LMD with its neck snapped, "we'll probably be classified as extremely dangerous."
"You know so much about us, but I only have a few pieces of information about you. That's obviously not fair—" Another Nick Fury stepped forward: "So, please forgive my little rudeness."
Fury's main purpose in coming here was naturally to observe the personalities of Rune and Clark. It can only be said that Clark is indeed worthy of being Steve's disciple; he is kind-hearted and unwilling to retaliate even when his friends are attacked. However, Rune is indeed more dangerous.
What Fury didn't expect was that Raven was also a mage, and seemed to be quite powerful. Even through the monitor screen, he could feel the suffocating oppressive atmosphere in the room—that's right, the one appearing in front of the three of them was an LMD.
Of course, what Fury fears most is Rune himself.
Although LMD wasn't carrying anything from the Observer's arsenal, its technological and magical protection was definitely top-of-the-line under normal circumstances. As a result, when Rune crushed LMD, he didn't even seem to exert any force, as easily as crushing a piece of tofu.
"Hmm, I could probably forgive your rudeness, provided the reward is good enough." Rune raised an eyebrow. "By the way, do you like greenskins?"
Fury shook his head: "No, although the Skrulls do have a considerable advantage in that area, I don't like them. But the reward is already prepared."
As they spoke, three sets of uniforms were pushed out.
"This uniform belongs to Clark," Fury said, looking at Superman and giving him a friendly smile. Clark nodded with a conflicted expression, but Fury didn't care and continued his introduction: "This treasure is made of nanoscale liquid metal, with a fine honeycomb structure on its surface. It automatically hardens when attacked, and it also has a filter that can be summoned in an emergency to resist poison gas and supply oxygen."
Providing oxygen wasn't really necessary; Kryptonians don't need to breathe. However, it was very useful for resisting poison gas. Clark, looking at the cool, angular armor suit, was clearly tempted. He glanced at Rune, wanting to ask for his opinion.
"Although Fury will definitely add surveillance and disabling devices to this suit, what's wrong with getting a high-tech suit for free?" Rune saw through Fury's little scheme, but still said, "Try it on."
Clark exclaimed, then looked at Fury, trying to read something from his eyes, but Fury only had one eye, and at that moment he was smiling, so there was no discernible emotional spectrum of three parts indifference, three parts sarcasm, and four parts sadness.
"Put it on, I'll take those things off for you when we get back," Rune comforted him. His words made Clark cheer. He immediately went to the suit and was about to ask if he had to take his clothes off when he saw the suit turn into small particles, fly onto Clark's body, and reassemble into a suit of armor.
This suit follows S.H.I.E.L.D.'s long-standing tradition, with an overall black color. Under natural light, the surface of the suit shimmers with starlight, and the movement of the nanobots causes these lights to flicker, just like the night sky.
Fury looked at Rune: "Can't you just go back and take it apart yourself? Don't say it in public!"
Just to annoy you, Rune thought to himself, then said to Clark, "Alright, go try it."
Clark nodded, then went downstairs to the training room. Rune looked at Fury again and pointed to the women's suit: "Don't just stand there, let me introduce this one."
Fury rolled his eyes.
"Alright, alright, consider it a debt I owe you. Although we've cooperated with Kamar-Taj to some extent, those arrogant mages aren't willing to share their magical knowledge with us," Fury shrugged. "So, don't expect this armor to offer you much help in terms of spellcasting."
Fury's words clearly indicated that he hoped Rune, this not-so-arrogant mage, could give them some knowledge about magic.
Rune curled his lip. It was true that the sorcerers of Kamar-Taj were unwilling to share magical knowledge with S.H.I.E.L.D., but this was by no means because of the sorcerers' personalities. Rather, it was because the sorcerers believed that S.H.I.E.L.D. relied too much on technology and might be suspected of abusing magical items—not to mention the Cosmic Cube, S.H.I.E.L.D. had even tried to study the Dark Book.
Furthermore, given that S.H.I.E.L.D. has long been infiltrated, sharing magical knowledge with them would mean sharing magical knowledge with other well-known Marvel villainous organizations. Rune would certainly not do such an act of aiding the enemy.
Seeing that Rune seemed not to have heard, Fury sighed.
"Alright, alright," he continued, explaining to Raven, "This armor is made of similar materials to Clark's, but the focus is different—"
The S.H.I.E.L.D. agent next to him slightly rotated the display stand, revealing the side of the clothing.
"We adopted a streamlined design and a semi-transparent, deep purple, semi-covering faceplate. This armor also incorporates gravity, allowing you to easily fly with the help of nanobots."
Raven also donned her armor, and the levitation cloak she wore was almost crushed inside. It struggled to fly out from among the countless tiny nanobots and only returned to Raven's shoulder after she was fully dressed in her armor. The armor was like a bodysuit, accentuating Raven's figure.
Fury squinted. Could this be Doctor Strange's levitation cloak?
"This last one, naturally, is for—"
Rune stored the armor directly into the void and refused Fury's introduction. The armor was indeed very cool, but there was no need to wear it now.
"Alright, I'm satisfied with your payment," Rune said. "And as long as you don't do anything bad, you can boss Clark around as much as you want. He's a good guy, but I'm different."
Rune's gaze swept over Fury, and even through the screen, Fury was still too intimidated by that scrutinizing look to move—he was reminded for the long time of the feeling he had when he faced a brown bear as a child.
"I believe in an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Fury, you're alive now because of your service in protecting the Earth, but don't use that as a shield." Rune squinted and said softly, "From now on, speak your mind. If I find out you've used Clark or Raven, I'll let you know that for those who fall into my hands, even going to hell is a mercy."
