Chapter 88 Sadness and Resilience
Chapter 88 Sadness and Resilience
The plane door slammed open, and Chi-Chi's anxious cries pierced the air like arrows: "Gohan, my Gohan, how are you?" She then rushed off the plane like a whirlwind, forcefully shoving Master Roshi aside. Her eyes were filled with urgency and panic, as if the only thing that mattered in the world was Gohan's safety, and everything else had vanished. Without even glancing at the injured Goku beside her, she shoved Shang Yun aside again, grabbed Gohan tightly in her arms, and burst into tears: "Gohan, how are you? It's all my fault, I didn't protect you well enough, making you suffer so much at such a young age. It's all my fault, I didn't stop you, letting you get into such a dangerous situation." Chi-Chi's tears flowed like a burst dam, dripping incessantly onto Gohan's pale face. Her hands frantically searched Gohan's body, carefully checking for wounds, her eyes filled with heartache and self-reproach, as if she were examining her most precious treasure that she had carelessly harmed.
Shang Yun stood to the side, silently watching everything, his eyes filled with helplessness and sorrow. After a long while, he spoke softly, "Chi-Chi, Gohan... he'll be alright."
Chi-Chi suddenly raised her head, her eyes filled with anger and resentment. She shouted at Shang Yun, "Nothing wrong? Look at him! How can he be okay in this state? It's all your fault! All you people do is fight and kill all day long, and now you've dragged Gohan into this too! What kind of fathers are you two!"
Krillin lowered his head, his voice low and hoarse: "Chi-Chi, I know you're angry, but we didn't want this battle either. Vegeta is too strong, we've done our best..."
"Trying your best? Is this what you call trying your best?" Chi-Chi interrupted Krillin, tears still streaming down her face. "Gohan is still so young, he shouldn't have to endure all this."
At this moment, Bulma, her face as pale as paper and her eyes red and swollen, stepped off the plane. She looked at Goku, the corners of her mouth slightly upturned, and said softly, "Goku, well done, you won." However, that smile was more bitter than tears, and the sadness and exhaustion in her eyes could not be concealed, as if it was a trace of comfort pieced together with her last bit of strength.
Krillin's face was filled with grief, and he said to Bulma in a trembling voice, "Everyone is dead. Tien Shinhan is dead, and Yamcha is dead too."
Bulma's eyes instantly filled with tears. She bit her lip, trying to hold back her sobs. "I know, I saw it on the video. Please, don't say anymore." But before she could finish speaking, she couldn't hold back any longer. She collapsed to the ground with a thud, buried her face in her hands, and burst into tears. Her cries echoed across the desolate ruins, each one a heartfelt plea for the departed, gripping the hearts of everyone present and making the already heavy atmosphere even more oppressive and suffocating.
Shang Yun dragged his heavy, leaden steps forward slowly, and said with a face full of guilt, "I'm sorry, I... I wasn't able to fight in time."
Bulma abruptly raised her head, her eyes burning with fury. She roared, "Why did you keep hiding and not make a move? Where were you all this time? If you had killed Naba sooner, would Yamcha have died?"
Shang Yun was struck by this sudden outburst of anger, completely stunned. He stood there dumbfounded, his mouth agape, but he couldn't utter a single word. He himself couldn't understand why he hadn't been able to unleash his full power before, but had inexplicably managed to at the last moment. As for any inner demons or anything like that, he was utterly confused, his mind a jumbled mess, like an unresolved tangled knot.
A cold wind howled, stirring up dust and pebbles that swirled around the group, rustling softly as if the silent weeping of the dead, adding to the desolation and sorrow of the land. The group stood silently on the ruins, grief like an invisible, impenetrable net, enveloping them all, making it hard to breathe.
The air was thick with the scent of death, like the earth's silent lament, telling the tragic story that had unfolded here. In the distance, the ashes of the fire still drifted in the wind, the last traces of once vibrant life and beautiful hope, now reduced to nothingness and dust, vanishing in the wind.
Yajirobe came running over, panting. Seeing everyone's condition, he scratched his head and asked, "I'm late. What happened?"
Krillin glanced at him and said wearily, "Vegeta just left, and we suffered heavy casualties."
Sage Korin sat on a rock to the side, shook his head and sighed, "This battle was too brutal, but Vegeta probably won't let it go."
Master Roshi chimed in, "Yes, we need to figure out how to deal with the upcoming crisis."
Goku struggled to lift his head, looked at Chi-Chi and Gohan, and said softly, "Chi-Chi, I'm sorry, I failed to protect Gohan."
Qiqi glared at him fiercely and shouted, "What's the point of saying all this now? All you know is fighting. Do you even care about this family anymore?"
Shang Yun lowered his head and said to Yajirobe, "It's all my fault for not showing my strength in time, otherwise we might have been able to reduce some casualties."
Yachirobe patted Shang Yun on the shoulder and said, "Don't blame yourself too much. Now we need to think about what to do next."
Along the way, Krillin silently pointed the way for Bulma, while the group first searched for the bodies of their companions. They found the bodies of Tien Shinhan and Yamcha. Master Roshi shakily circled around, muttering in a hoarse voice, "Where's Chiaotzu?"
Shang Yun sighed deeply, his eyes filled with sorrow: "Jiaozi has vanished into thin air and can never be found again. He died by self-destruction."
Upon hearing this, a long silence fell over everyone again. Only the hum of the airplane engines echoed in the eerily quiet world, as if playing a mournful elegy for the lives lost…
Silently, they carried their comrades' remains to the plane. Everyone's face was filled with sorrow and exhaustion. The heavy atmosphere felt like lead weights, pressing down on their hearts and making it hard for them to breathe.
"This battle was a nightmare! I've never seen the enemy so powerful before. Several times I felt like I was going to die on the spot." Klin's voice was hoarse and broken, as if it had been repeatedly sanded, and every word was filled with the trembling and lingering fear of surviving a disaster.
