Chapter 462 Return to Port
"I don't want to go home—"
Peggy suddenly said to Dick.
“We’ve already reached the outskirts of Garrison, Peggy,” Dick said. “Besides, you said you wanted to go home.”
"Because I have no choice, I'd rather go back to Cowtown than go to Red Wave Fortress," Peggy said.
"Regardless, this is your choice," Dick said, turning to Peggy. "You have to take responsibility for your choice."
"Okay, okay," Peggy said, sitting back down. "But my brother will definitely yell at me."
"That's because he cares about you, and he'll definitely forgive you," Dick comforted him. "And I'll plead for you."
,"real?"
"Of course, after all, it was I who took you away," Dick said. "Ultimately, the blame lies with me."
"Okay, it's settled then!" Peggy leaned her head in again.
Upon seeing this, Dick couldn't help but smile.
Peggy immediately asked, "What are you laughing at?"
"I was thinking, you're actually afraid of getting scolded," Dick said, "even though you can be so mischievous sometimes."
"None of your business, humph!"
As they spoke, the carriage had already arrived below the city gate.
"We're here, Peggy, get out," Dick said. "Can we get there?"
"Didn't I tell you? I'm full of energy now," Peggy jumped out of the car. "And I know this city better than you do."
This is your home, isn't this a given?
Dick didn't speak, he just nodded slightly.
Then the horses were handed over to the stable boy at the city gate so that he could take care of them.
He then immediately caught up with Peggy and headed towards the castle.
Peggy walked briskly, glancing around every now and then.
Suddenly, she stopped and turned to look at Dick.
Dick didn't stop either.
Peggy frowned: "Why did you stop?"
"Because you stopped."
"But I'm waiting for you to come up."
The guards were supposed to follow behind their employer, but since it was Peggy's request, Dick had no choice but to comply.
Dick walked to Peggy's side and walked alongside her.
Peggy then asked, "How long have I been gone?"
"It seems like it's been about six months," Dick replied.
"Time flies," Peggy sighed. "I used to find this city boring and dull, but after a while, it seems surprisingly welcoming."
"That's the meaning of home," Dick chimed in.
"Homeland?" Peggy suddenly lowered her head in thought. "Then Dick, have you ever thought about going back to your hometown?"
"I told you, my family doesn't want me to go back," Dick said, looking up at the sky.
A seagull glides across the horizon, and the white clouds above the bird resemble a large ship.
The winter sun always lacked strength, so much so that Dick couldn't even find it behind the thick clouds.
There are many more charcoal stalls in the market ahead, which are considered seasonal items.
"I asked if you wanted to, not if you could. Forget it, you can't go back anyway," Peggy said.
Just then, a group of soldiers approached from the front.
The leader was Instructor Randolph.
Even though they were all Peggy's brother's men, Dick instinctively took a step forward and stood in front of Peggy.
"Instructor Randolph," Dick greeted him.
"It really is Miss Peggy."
Randolph stared at Peggy for a long time before turning to Dick. "Instructor Dick, someone reported that Miss had entered the city, so I brought men to greet her."
But this posture doesn't look like a welcome.
It seems to be for the purpose of rescuing kidnapped hostages.
However, Dick wasn't a robber.
Randolph bowed to Peggy and said, "Miss Peggy, His Excellency the Duke wishes to see you." Dick then asked, "Does Mrs. Farah know that Peggy has returned?"
Randolph shook his head: "Madam doesn't need to know about politics."
"But this is a family matter," Dick argued.
"Since it's a family matter, we outsiders have no need to interfere," Randolph said, squinting at Dick. "Instructor Buchanan, you'd better worry about yourself right now. Do you know how much damage you've caused to the harbor?"
Dick could roughly guess some of it: "I will go to apologize to the Duke of Pena myself, but I think it would be better for Peggy to visit her mother first. I think Mrs. Farah is probably the one who most wants to see Peggy right now."
Randolph looked at Peggy with suspicion, then at Dick, seemingly puzzled by Dick's intentions.
However, he did not persist:
"Very well, but I will send someone to accompany you. In that case, Sir Buchanan, please go to the Duke's study immediately."
"I will," Dick nodded.
Randolph then ordered his men to surround Dick and Peggy and "escort" them into the castle.
On the way, Peggy tugged at Dick's sleeve and whispered:
"Thanks--""
Perhaps Dick does deserve a thank you.
Let Peggy go to Mrs. Farah first. Even if Duke Pena really wants to punish Peggy, Mrs. Farah will be there to dissuade him.
After that, the two parted ways.
Dick went directly to the Duke's study.
Pena was already waiting in the room, and as soon as she saw Dick, she immediately questioned Randall:
"Where's Peggy?"
"She went to greet Mrs. Farah first," Randolph replied.
Pena nodded, then looked at Dick, her eyes wide:
"Dick Buchanan, do you know your crime?"
Dick shook his head.
"Why did you steal Peggy and stop her wedding? You even fought with Sir Perón, a Guardian Knight! You've essentially put the Peyton family in the enemy of both Redtrenburgh and the court! Do you know how much of a loss that is for Cowharf?"
Faced with Pena's angry accusations, Dick lowered his head:
"My lord, I confess to this without hesitation, and I am willing to accept punishment."
Although Dick was forced into this situation, if he wanted to save Peggy, he had to take her to Mr. Mosley's library immediately.
Perhaps this explanation can mitigate the punishment.
However, Dick also knew very well what Pena was thinking.
Peggy was indeed the most favored person in the port, but Peña didn't care about her as much as he claimed.
If sacrificing Peggy could bring huge benefits to the port, he would do it without hesitation.
Even if it means Peggy marries a cripple.
If Peggy had been with Pena instead of Dick at the time...
So before he saves Peggy, he will definitely make sure Peggy finishes her wedding first.
Once the deed is done, the relationship between Chau Harbour and Hung Tao Fort will be solidified.
Whether this would delay Peggy's optimal treatment time was not Peggy's primary concern.
"Punish?" Pena shouted. "Do you know how much we've lost this time? Will punishing you make up for it? Your assets were a gift from the Payton family. Even if you're punished, I won't get a single coin! And you can't even be bothered to argue back. I really hate your attitude, Dick. Do you want me to just hang you—"
"—Knock knock knock!"
Halfway through the conversation, there was a sudden, urgent knocking on the door.
Pena's anger subsided slightly.
He straightened his posture and said, "Come in."
The flustered man who walked in was none other than Master Horney.
He was clutching a letter tightly in his hand—
"My lord, something urgent has happened!"
