"Lin Wei!" Ah Jun's eyes widened in horror as he tried to rush over to her rescue, but two grinning fishmen blocked his way.
They could only watch helplessly as Lin Wei was dragged into deeper waters by that withered claw.
Another fishman set his sights on Ah Jun's defenseless companion, baring his large mouth full of sharp teeth and reaching for his neck with withered claws, saliva dripping down mixed with rainwater.
"It's over..."
Ah Jun's heart sank into the abyss.
laugh!laugh!laugh!
suddenly.
Three dark green afterimages pierced through the dense rain curtain without warning and descended from the sky.
puff!puff!puff!
A series of dull thuds, like blunt instruments piercing flesh, rang out.
Several jets of dark green blood shot out simultaneously.
The fishman who was holding Lin Wei's ankle suddenly froze.
Its bulging eyes suddenly bulged out as it looked down incredulously at its own throat.
A thick, long vine had somehow pierced through its neck.
"Uh...ga..."
The fishmen convulsed violently a few times, and the fierce light in their eyes quickly dimmed.
Time seemed to freeze for a moment.
Having narrowly escaped death, Lin Wei struggled to surface, coughing violently to expel the sewage that had been ingested, her face still showing a dazed expression.
Ah Jun remained in his attack stance, his shocked gaze fixed on the sinking fishmen.
"A fish-man monster? The type of monster has changed again..."
At that moment, a calm voice rang out amidst the sound of rain, clearly reaching their ears.
They instinctively looked up.
Not far away, atop a crooked streetlamp, crouched a figure shrouded in the downpour.
He was wearing a simple vest and trousers, his body was wet, and there was a layer of fine blue scales on both sides of his cheeks that extended all the way to his neck. His pupils were also covered with a transparent film, making him look somewhat eerie in the dim light.
His eyes were calm and expressionless, as if he hadn't been the one who had instantly killed three fishmen with a mere gesture.
"You...who are you?"
Ah Jun was startled by Han Ning's appearance and tried to grab his companion and run away.
"Are you students from the Agricultural University? Do you know how to get to the seed storage warehouse?" Han Ning ignored the terrified looks in the eyes of the young people below and spoke calmly.
"It is...it is a person."
Seeing that Han Ning could communicate normally and did not attack them, Ah Jun's tense mood calmed down slightly.
Having survived the ordeal, he rubbed his temples and quickly said, "Thank you! Thank you for saving my life!"
"The seed bank...you mean the experimental center for storing crop seeds at low temperatures? It's in the west campus of the school, and we're in the south campus."
"Do you know the way? Take me there," Han Ning said.
"I do recognize him... but..."
Ah Jun said with great apprehension,
"That place has been taken over by these monsters; it's probably very dangerous."
Chapter 68 Where Did This Show-Off Come From?
"How about you go to where we live first? There are more people there, and you can go together as a group."
"What are you students majoring in?" Han Ning asked.
"We're all landscape architecture majors..."
"...Gardens...are useless."
Han Ning initially wanted to refuse, but considering that he was looking for someone knowledgeable in agronomy, he nodded.
"Lead the way."
He flung out vines that wrapped around the waists of the three people.
A flash of light appeared, and the spiritual power of the Rejuvenation Spell flowed along the vines, helping the three recover from their external injuries.
This is a little trick he developed.
...
After further questioning, Han Ning learned that Ah Jun and the others were attacked by the fishmen while they were out searching for food.
Most encounters with survivors of attacks in the wild are due to food.
If there's no shortage of food, who would dare to venture out and take risks?
To Han Ning's surprise... Ah Jun was actually an Awakened One, with speed-related abilities, though he had only recently awakened and his abilities were relatively weak.
Guided by Ah Jun, Han Ning led the three still-shaken students across the floodwaters to a relatively intact student dormitory building in the southern part of the Agricultural University.
The first floor of the building was submerged, but the floors above the third floor were still above the water. Most of the windows were boarded up or covered with debris, giving the building a heavily guarded appearance.
"Who goes there?! Halt!"
The sudden appearance of Han Ning, a distinctive outsider, immediately attracted great attention from the survivors in the dormitory building.
He was stopped by the guards inside the building.
Several wary eyes were cast down through the gaps in the barrier.
Han Ning ignored the warnings and said to Ah Jun:
"Go and call out all the people in charge here, or those who have influence."
Ah Jun didn't dare to delay, and nodded hurriedly. He struggled to help Lin Wei, who had just caught her breath, and waded through the water to go upstairs with the unconscious companion.
Soon, the sound of running and shouting filled the dormitory building.
A short while later, Han Ning, recommended by Ah Jun, entered the dormitory building and walked up the stairs to the third floor.
When he arrived, the corridor was packed with people; at a glance, there were at least a hundred.
Most of them were young students, and they seemed to be in good spirits.
There were also some older men and women, who were likely teachers or school staff.
Mixed in among the crowd were some people whose expressions were noticeably more fierce, most likely those who had awakened.
Han Ning's appearance immediately quieted down the previously noisy corridor.
Everyone's eyes were on him.
He has now lost the fish gills and returned to a normal human appearance.
Han Ning scanned the crowd and, before the school survivors could speak, preemptively said:
"Who is the strongest Awakened One here? Or rather, who is in charge now? Step forward and speak."
The words fell.
All eyes turned to a man standing at the front of the crowd.
The man looked to be in his early thirties, not particularly tall, with strong features.
Faced with everyone's gaze, the man simply acquiesced.
"My name is Zou Yu."
"Temporarily in charge of coordinating affairs here, may I ask who you are?" Zou Yu looked Han Ning up and down with a questioning gaze.
"Han Ning, an Awakened One who was just passing by."
Han Ning briefly introduced himself and continued,
"Chief Zou, I would like to recruit an expert from among you who is proficient in agricultural planting, especially crop cultivation, soil and fertilizer, and pest and disease control."
"The teacher is the best; I need him to help me manage a planting area."
In exchange, I can provide you with some food or do something for you, within my capabilities.
Zou Yu and the students and teachers around him were somewhat confused by Han Ning's self-absorbed manner.
Imagine a complete stranger, someone whose abilities you don't know, suddenly running up to you and saying they want to recruit your companions.
Most people would find it baffling.
"Recruit experts?" Zou Yu frowned, clearly disbelieving.
"At a time like this, you expect us to believe someone who suddenly appears and whose origins are unknown?"
"Anyone can make empty promises. Why should we believe you have the ability, and why should we believe you will keep your promise after taking the people away?"
He leaned forward slightly:
"The people here survive by supporting each other; you can't just take them away like that."
"You don't trust me, perhaps simply because you're not very familiar with my area of expertise."
Han Ning can understand the other person's psychology.
Although this method might make others think he's arrogant and pretentious, he believes it's the most efficient way.
He smiled:
"It seems that some proof is needed."
He had actually observed it secretly.
Outside the dormitory area, fish-man monsters often roam, indicating that the extraordinary level of this group is not very high.
As soon as he finished speaking, the air around Han Ning distorted slightly, and dark green vines suddenly emerged from the void in front of him, beside him, and even behind him without warning.
They swayed slowly, shimmering with emerald light, like pythons coiling around Han Ning, exuding an inexplicable sense of oppression.
