Chapter 17 Finding a Job
Chapter 17 Finding a Job
Zhou Fengchen's first thought was that someone's child had run into the wrong room, but then he realized something was wrong. The door was locked, so how did he get in?
"Giggle..."
Just then, the child ran back in with a giggle, grabbed the biscuits that Zhou Fengchen hadn't finished eating the night before, and ran out again.
This time, Zhou Fengchen saw clearly that it was a little boy with a deathly pale face and bulging veins on his forehead, looking rather frightening.
He reached out and beckoned, then took a deep sniff of the air in the room. He frowned. "It's haunted!"
He quietly got up, walked barefoot to the bedroom door, and looked out through the crack in the door.
In the dead of night, when the outside light was very dim, the child sat on the ground, eating cookies and playing with toy cars, while a long-haired woman sat on the sofa in the living room, staring up at the ceiling.
Zhou Fengchen followed her gaze upwards and noticed a rope loop hanging from the handle of the ceiling fan, swaying and spinning.
At that moment, the woman seemed to glance at him, then picked up a stool, stepped on it, and stuffed the noose around her neck. She then kicked the stool over, turned her face towards him, the noose tightening around her, and her tongue stretched out longer and longer…
Zhou Fengchen rubbed his nose and suddenly understood what the old lady downstairs meant. A mother and son had died in this house sometime ago, and it was haunted by vengeful ghosts, so whoever lived there would die.
In that case, the landlord siblings are really awful; I should teach them a lesson when I have some free time.
He turned around, took out a yellow paper talisman from his bag, closed the door, and pasted the talisman on the back of the door.
I'll go to sleep first, and figure out how to take care of this mother and child tomorrow.
He had just lain down in bed when there was a knock on the door. After two knocks, a scream rang out, followed by silence.
……
The next morning, Zhou Fengchen got up early, opened his bedroom door, glanced at the empty living room, and then went back to his daily morning exercises, which he had been doing for over a decade. After washing up, he tidied his hair in front of the mirror. He was going to go out and find something to do today; he couldn't just sit around and do nothing.
The old lady on the first floor was shelling peanuts again, doing it very carefully. Zhou Fengchen didn't disturb her and walked over quietly. Just as he entered the alley, he heard hurried footsteps behind him. It was the little girl catching up.
She was carrying a schoolbag, seemingly on her way to school. She looked Zhou Fengchen up and down and asked, "Brother, did you sleep well last night?"
Zhou Fengchen smiled and said, "You slept pretty well, what's up?"
"It's nothing. Maybe you're a good person, but... you must remember, if someone calls your name downstairs in the middle of the night, never answer! If you answer, you won't be able to escape!" The girl said solemnly, then ran away.
Zhou Fengchen was completely baffled. A good person? Who's calling me downstairs? Does anyone know my name?
……
There weren't many streets near the neighborhood. Zhou Fengchen had no experience looking for a job and didn't know what he was suited for. He wandered around for a whole afternoon before finally gritting his teeth and going into a small restaurant that was hiring.
It was lunchtime, and there were no customers in the restaurant. Two middle-aged women were sleeping on the table, a fat chef was playing on his phone, and a woman in her thirties was sitting behind the cashier. The first two words that came to Zhou Fengchen's mind when he saw this woman were: dairy cow.
This woman was slim and beautiful, especially her breasts, half of which were sticking out and dazzlingly bright.
Before his death, Zhou Daoxing liked to take Zhou Fengchen to squat on the road outside Gejiaji, pointing at the women coming and going, and saying to him in an extremely heavy tone: "This is a small steamed bun, tasteless; this is a hemp stalk, no meat, and it's hard to chew; this one is amazing, it's called a cow, grab it and you can play with it as much as you want, the more you play, the more fun it gets..."
The woman behind the cashier noticed Zhou Fengchen's gaze, glanced down, then puffed out her chest arrogantly and smiled seductively, "Young man, would you like to eat?"
Zhou Fengchen quickly wiped his drool. "No, I came to find cows... no! I came to find work."
The woman's face fell, and she said listlessly, "Kitchen helper, 1,800 a month, meals included but accommodation not included, take it or leave it."
Zhou Fengchen thought for a moment, 1,800? That's not a small amount, "Let's do it!"
The chubby chef next to him perked up and said in a thick Northeastern accent, "Brother, you've come to the right place! This place is really great."
As he spoke, he came over and pulled Zhou Fengchen, "Come, come, I just cooked a chicken, have a bite and taste my old Li's cooking."
……
At dinner time, Zhou Fengchen, dressed in a chef's uniform and wearing a small hat, officially started work, mainly doing tasks such as chopping vegetables, handing out plates, and doing odd jobs.
His profound skills were extraordinary. His martial arts, from the ninth move to the eighteenth, were all knife techniques. His knife skills were divine. After figuring out the tricks, he wielded the knife with great skill and was also very clean and efficient at doing odd jobs. The fat chef and the proprietress were dumbfounded.
When they had a moment to spare, the chubby chef patted him on the shoulder and said, "Bro! You're awesome! I have high hopes for you."
Zhou Fengchen found the chubby chef quite amusing, so he chatted with him for a while. The chef's surname was Li, he was from Heilongjiang, and he had worked in the shop for five or six years, making him a long-time employee. The "cow" outside was the boss, whom everyone called the boss's wife. She was a widow who had lost her husband three years ago.
According to Lao Li, the landlady is very flirtatious, but unfortunately she doesn't like him, otherwise she would have hooked up with him long ago.
As the two were chatting, Old Li pulled out his phone, glanced at the time, and his expression immediately changed. He said, "Damn it! We've gone too far! Hurry up and pack up, it's time to go home!"
Zhou Fengchen felt that Old Li's reaction was a bit strange, but he didn't think much of it and joined in tidying up.
After they finished, the two of them left the kitchen together. The two female helpers outside had also finished tidying up and were standing by the cashier, stamping their feet anxiously.
There were still customers at a table in the lobby drinking, when the proprietress, her face pale, pleaded, "We're closing up shop. Stop drinking and leave!"
The three men drinking were immediately displeased upon hearing this. "What's wrong? Are you worried we won't pay? It's only eight o'clock, are you in such a hurry to be reborn?"
Zhou Fengchen quietly asked Old Li, whose face was pale, "What's wrong with you guys? It's okay if you're a little late, isn't it?"
Old Li was trembling. "Let's go, quick!"
As they were talking, the entire hall suddenly went dark; the power had gone out, and the temperature strangely dropped as well.
As Zhou Fengchen was wondering, his hand tightened, and he was pulled by Old Li into the kitchen. Two screams followed them in.
In the darkness, Old Li released Zhou Fengchen, swiftly pulled out a kitchen knife, and pointed it tremblingly at the kitchen door.
Zhou Fengchen frowned. Was there something dirty? Just as he was about to reach out, a fragrant aroma wafted from the front, and he vaguely heard the figure of the proprietress running in.
"Boss lady, over here! Over here!" Old Li called out in a trembling voice.
The proprietress ran up to him, looked him over, and then suddenly snuggled into Zhou Fengchen's arms, hugging his waist, pressing her face tightly against his neck, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Zhou Fengchen was originally planning to look around, but when he smelled the landlady's fragrant breath and felt the sensation in her arms, he was completely stunned, and his heart began to pound faster.
Just then, the guests outside who were cursing and swearing suddenly let out a strange cry, and then the tables and benches moved, as if they had run out.
Upon hearing the strange noise, Old Li and the two women cried out "Ah!" and squatted down, the kitchen knife clattering to the ground.
The proprietress went even further, reaching out and grabbing at Zhou Fengchen's body, finally grabbing his crotch.
Zhou Fengchen tensed up, feeling completely paralyzed, and dared not move an inch.
The entire food stall was silent. After a while, Zhou Fengchen swallowed, stepped aside, and said, "Those customers don't seem to have paid."
"Don't speak." The proprietress's voice trembled as she leaned closer.
